We have received a request from one of our members for a creative writing course/group which would ideally follow Meg Denning’s concept for the activity we held at Monkton last year. Meg followed Sonia Overall’s psychogeographical approach:
‘Psychogeography examines how our psychological states are influenced by the physical environment and how our emotions and behaviours are shaped by the places we inhabit. It encourages a mindful and often unplanned exploration aiming to reveal the hidden or overlooked aspects of both urban and rural landscapes and how they affect our perceptions.’
A leader following this approach might then choose a different (ideally easily accessible by public transport) location for each meeting, one which allows for both physical movement but also sedentary reflection from a fixed spot. It could, of course, be as simple as indoor/outdoor views of a member’s garden and following/recording developments and perceptions through the seasons, At the end of the meeting there should ideally be time for those taking part to share their thoughts and to receive constructive feedback on any writing prompted by place/time.
