Mike Trevethick, who will give this course writes:
In these sessions we will discuss how common medicines work. We begin with swallowing a pill and ask how does it get to where it needs to and how does it work to alleviate symptoms? Subsequently we will address 3 common disease areas – hypertension, asthma and pain. In these sessions we will discuss what causes the disease, how the medicines we take work and what is coming next for new treatments.
There will be 4 sessions:
Thursday, 21st January, 10am -12pm: Session 1 – Swallowing a pill – how does it get to where it needs to and what influences this process? We will also discuss the main mechanisms by which our common drugs work.
Thursday, 28th January, 10am -12pm: Session 2 – Hypertension – what is it and how is it caused? What can we do to reduce our blood pressure and how do anti-hypertensive medicines work? What’s on the horizon for new treatments?
Thursday, 4th February, 10am -12pm: Session 3 – What is pain and how does our body detect it? Common pain killers are paracetamol, ibuprofen and codeine/morphine. They work, but do we know how? How can we improve pain medication?
Thursday, 11th February, 10am -12pm: Session 4 – Asthma is now considered an inflammatory disease and asthma treatment guidelines changed a few years ago. What drove this change? Plus, better anti-inflammatory drugs are now approved – what are they and how do they work?
There will be a mid-session refreshment break.
There are 15 places available and applications close on Saturday,10th January, 2027.’
