Art Study Group

Status:Active, open to new members
Group email: Art Study group
When: Monthly on Thursdays 2:00 pm-4:00 pm
1st Thursday of the month

Two or three times a year group members agree a theme for study and discussion with past themes
ranging from Animals and Cityscapes to Surrealism and Sculpture with much in between. Each
member of the group gives a short talk/presentation detailing what they have discovered on an aspect
of the theme.

For the first few sessions of 2026 we are planning to focus on aspects of non-Western art with the aim
of offering short illustrated talks on the subject to interested members later in the year. All are
welcome.

Following an introduction to the history of Illustration our interests have recently led us to look at a wide
assortment of topics including the work of Aubrey Beardsley, Arthur Rackham and William Blake, as
well as the work of some perhaps less well-known illustrators of cartoons, medieval wall paintings in
English churches, London Underground posters, box art and jigsaws. Examples of each are illustrated
here in these photos.
