Contemporary Art - Theory and Practice monthly

Status:Active, open to new members
Group email: Contemporary Art - Theory and Practice monthly group
When: On Wednesdays 10:30 am-12:00 pm
Venue: Private Venue

Meeting on the 2nd Wednesday of the month, between 10.30am - 12noon, the group will meet in a member's home and members will take it in turn to present a 30 minute introduction to their chosen Contemporary artist, explaining their style and influences.

The same group member will set a project, for everyone in the group, to produce a piece that reflects the artist under discussion. It will be in the style of that artist, but with the individual members own influences behind it.

During the following 3 weeks pictures of the members' work will be posted to the dedicated Facebook page (or circulated on email for those that don't use Facebook) and can be critiqued. The conversation will be continued in the first half, of the next 'in person' meeting the following month.

We are extremely fortunate to have several significant Contemporary Art Galleries on our doorstep. We will arrange visits to Turner Contemporary and Carl Freedman, and the many other small galleries, when they have their new showings.

For the traditional art lover, it can often be a challenge to warm to contemporary art as it seems to be chaotic, with no particular style, and due to this haphazard and unrecognisable nature it often attracts resistance and is dismissed. However, with an open mind, the genre is easily accessible, and a reflective practice can help our mental health.
